Blog Love #3 Awareness
It’s not uncommon for bloggers to join together as a community to create a reaction. Personally, I find the impact that the blogging community can make inspiring. But the key to making any difference with uniting together is to get the word out.
So in this, the 3rd Sunday Blog Love, let’s talk about uniting the blogosphere!
May will be hosting two huge events for bloggers to take action and unite. And if you’re going to get involved, it’s time to act quickly.
May 1st
According to Daily Blog Tips, Pew Internet sites that a poll taken in 2005 indicates that only 5% of Internet users use RSS (really simple syndication). With the Internet as huge as it is, 5% is a drastically small number.
Daniel Scocco is attempting to change that number by having the blogosphere come together to raise awareness about RSS by announcing that May 1st is RSS Day.
The Purpose:
Educate our visitors, readers, and the Internet about RSS. What is RSS, how it is helpful, and the power that RSS has on multiple levels.
Topic:
Easy! Make a post about RSS. Anything you want to say about RSS, this is your day to do it as the blogosphere rallies awareness about the most simple and efficent thing we have as bloggers.
As an incentive, you’ll also be entered into the contest hosted by Daily Blog Tips.
Get Involved:
Be sure to write your post. But in addition, you can check out RSSDay website for banners to promote the concept! Join the blogosphere and teach your visitors about RSS and how it can actually help them!
May 15th
Bloggers Unite hosted by Blog Catalog.
The Purpose:
Harness the power of the blogosphere to make an impact, on one day, united under one cause. While the topics and focus may change, the cause is the same. Blog Catalog aims to bring the blogosphere together to raise awareness for specific aspects that affect the entire world.
Topic:
Up for great discussion, this time around Blogger’s Unite for Human Rights.
Get Involved:
Join the Blog Catalog group discussing this topic, publish a post about human rights on May 1st, and network to promote your cause within human rights.
Your Turn
Both of the above are great causes. Will you be participating and if so, what will your action be?

Hmmm… blogs as a way of promoting RSS. Preaching to the converted perhaps…? :) It does surprise me that the figure is so low though, as the technology has now been in existence for a long time.

I’ll blog it for sure! I’ll think about BC, I’m a little more then a little ticked at them right now :-)

James » Perhaps it could be preaching to the choir. But, I blogged for a long time before I understood RSS or how to use it. The message can still reach many. Additionally, the posts may help anyone searching for information about RSS. And maybe it’s not just about what RSS is but talking about your favorite RSS reader, where you subscribe, what blogs you enjoy the most?
Dennis » Sounds great. Sorry to hear that you’re upset with BlogCatalog. They’ve been a great resource for me.

They’ve been a great resource for me as well, in regards to meeting other bloggers and finding cool blogs…my beef is with management, mainly “support”; if I may rant for a minute…
Weeks ago I noticed that my avatar just suddenly stopped appearing on other peoples widgets; not good as that’s the main thing….email support is non-existent (for me anyways) and when I finally did get a woman via phone, and told her my issue, her first response is: “Are you sure?”
Um yea.
Still no answer as to why this is happening…or not happening as the case may be. Anyone here have an idea perhaps?

Dennis » It may be a glitch in their server. Honestly, they probably won’t figure out if it’s a bug or seriously investigate it until there are multiple reports. Additionally, it may be an isolated incident. My suggestion would be to try logging out and back into and see it works again. The cookie that is set for BlogCatalog may have expired for you and if you don’t regularly login and logout, perhaps that’s something you need to give a try.

Hmmm…very interesting subject matter here. I’ll have to investigate further.

*sigh* Not a cookie issue. Oh well.
Detour – how did you give categories its own page. is that a plugin like archives?

[...] we learned from RSS Awareness day is that not a lot of people actually know what RSS is or how valuable it can be for the end user. [...]
